Dear friends,
If you're someone looking back at the last few months, wondering where the time has gone, and what on earth happened to those New Year's resolutions you set, I'd like to introduce you to the power of tiny goals.
A few years ago, in a writing program I completed, the teacher told us to set our writing goals so small that they were almost ridiculous.
I’m talking about waking up and writing for 5 minutes each day.
Now, this wasn't going to turn into a novel on its own, but it was about getting into the habit of showing up daily for ourselves.
If you can’t trust and rely on yourself for the tiny goals, what makes you think you’ll turn up for those big goals?
You need to build a routine for yourself where you commit to turning up even when it’s hard. Because 5 minutes turns into 20 minutes, turns into 1 hour, and so it goes…
If you’re struggling to fit a walk in each day, your goal should be as simple as putting on your shoes and leaving the house…every day. Once you’re out the door, getting your steps in suddenly becomes a lot easier.
We often get caught up in setting lofty goals for ourselves (heck, I still fall back on this periodically) without building a sustainable framework to help us achieve them.
Think of that thing that’s been on your mind for a while that you still haven't completed.
You got it?
Now think about the smallest possible daily goal you can set that will take you one step closer to that. For example:
LEARN: Spend 5 minutes learning one thing about your finances on the train.
SAVE: Transfer $5 into your savings account.
INVEST: Open a micro-investing account and invest $5.
Are you laughing at how small this goal seems?
Good, you’re doing it right.
Once you master the art of consistently showing up for your small goals, it’ll make it much easier to scale them up. Because now you have proof that you can consistently show up for yourself, even when you don’t feel like it.
Have you set a tiny goal for yourself? I’d love to hear it! Drop a note in the comments below 👇
All the best for your financial future,
Kate
