The weather has been slow to warm up here and the garden has not exploded yet as it did this time last year. But for my houseplants, it’s not so much the temperature that matters: it’s the light.
A couple of plants that were struggling over the winter are now producing leaves left and right. This time of year gives me the chance to admire again the sheer variety of how houseplants’ leaves grow, as I wrote last year:

Earlier this week I took a moment to admire the ZZ-plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) that lives in our kitchen. The way in which this plant’s leaves grow is nothing short of magical to me: it produces a long stalk of tightly wound leaves, which then unfurl all together. And the glossy green of the leaves is just sumptuous (also, it’s a really easy plant that doesn’t mind a bit of shade).
