Ashford Manor
My dearest,
I asked her again.
I thought she might evade, or pretend not to hear, as she’s done before. But today, Lucy didn’t move. She simply looked out the window, her hands still damp from hanging the wash, and said:
“Elena was never a stranger to this house.”
Just that.
No explanation. No apology. No elaboration.
I felt the words fall into me like stones into water—ripples of memory I didn’t know I’d been carrying.
The name had always felt faintly familiar, like a lyric I couldn’t quite place. But now it tolls like a bell.
I don’t know who she was to you.
But I think I know who she was to them; the ones who left the notes, who pressed violets into pages, who stitched initials into linen.
Maybe Elena is the thread I’ve been pulling without knowing it. Maybe she is the one who’s been writing me back.
And if so... I need to know what you promised her.
Because every promise you made to me feels altered now. Not broken, not false, just... doubled. Layered with shadows.
Lucy won’t say more.
But her silence no longer shields me.
It only sharpens the ache.
