Ashford Manor
I returned to the orchard.
Not to dig. Not to search. Just to be. The trees were still, but the air held that hush I’ve come to recognize; like the moment before a bow touches string. As if something is about to be played.
I sat beneath the trellis and unfolded all the letters again. Yours. E.S.’s. The one marked “FOR L.” And the one I still cannot read.
I thought about the way ink can fade, and how sometimes it’s the pressure of a hand, not the words themselves that leave the deepest trace. What if everything I’ve been chasing isn’t truth at all, but residue? The ghost of a ghost.
The ring from the velvet box still fits me, though I don’t think it was ever meant to. It catches the light in a strange way now like it’s trying to reflect something that isn’t there.
And then I heard it.
Not a voice. A sound. Low, breathy—like someone exhaling behind me.
I turned quickly, but there was no one.
Only a violet petal floating down, slow and soft, landing on the letter marked “FOR L.”
It felt like punctuation.
Like someone saying, Yes. Keep going.
I will.
