The National Center for Climate Change Research in Boulder, Colorado, is being broken apart and shut down. This a big deal.
What appeared last week to be a fool’s attack on the science of climate change in the interest of Trump’s fossil fuel donors by the odious Director of the Office of Management and Budget, Russell Voight, has now turned out to be instead an act of cheap revenge by the Mafia King himself for Colorado’s refusal to free a Republican official who had been convicted and sentenced in a Colorado state court to 9 years in prison for attempting to tamper with election machinery.
Let’s unpack this turn of events.
NCAR, as it is called, employs some 850 scientists and technicians who predict weather and climate in order to understand and warn of hurricanes and their growing intensity, atmospheric rivers and floods like those wreaking havoc today in the Northwest and California, cloud formation and wind currents which govern air travel and storms at sea, and much, much more, including, of course, models and measurements for how fast America and our Earth are warming and becoming more polluted with CO2, methane, and fluorinated gases.
Very big money relies on NCAR for risk assessment, from Boston to Berne. That’s what insurance companies do, and need. Plus forcasting for America’s national defense, from air to sea.
Not to put too fine a point on it, but, also, more Texas girls will now drown in their river summer camps without NCAR to warn them, trailers in MAGA Florida and the hollers of Kentucky will be blown off their cheap concrete blocks, New York subways flooded, Washington’s rivers raging, Nebraska ranches dried out. NCAR can’t stop any of that, of course.
But it warns us. It helps us plan for our collective future.
NCAR works as the headlights on the clown car we crazy humans are driving in the crazy Trump Era.
Now Trump and the calm demented Vought wish to blind us.

True. And rightly so.
So what was the real reason for the attack on America’s leading science, climate and weather center?
An aging blond true believer—and election official— named Tina Peters had engineered a break-in of election machines in western Colorado in hopes of changing election results to somehow say her county voted more for Trump in his losing 2020 election than it already had (an overwhelmingly 2-1 Trumpy region already.) It was a bold but ridiculous crime. Was she just signaling, slavishly, to her Leader to gain a future appointment—a shot at Colorado Congresswoman Lauren Boebert’s job or, who knows, Ambassador to Moldova?
Her sentencing judge in Colorado had lowered the boom: “You are as privileged as they come and you used that privilege to obtain power, a following and fame,” Judge Matthew Barrett told Peters in a lacerating lecture. “You’re a charlatan who used and is still using your prior position in office to peddle a snake oil that’s been proven to be junk time and time again.”
Not that this bothered our Toddler Mafia King. Quite the opposite. He has been pressuring Colorado and its excellent governor Jared Polis to overturn her conviction ever since.
The problem for Trump is that Peters was sentenced in Colorado, for Colorado state election fraud. He could not legally pardon her federally as he has major drug criminals such as the former president of Honduras or so many pay-for-play bitcoin and billionaire religious scammers.
He was stymied.
So what to do when the Toddler has his pardon-toy taken away? He wails! He screams!
He commands his calm bald deranged minion Russ Voight to find some pressure point. (Digression to readers: Nothing wrong with baldness!) NCAR became the easy target, a two-fer, a center for science and climate truth, and an engine for thousands of jobs in a defiant Blue State.
It is as if the King had muddied his cloak on the way back to Mar-a-Lago and therefore ordered whatever muddy village to be torched and the girls and women to be grabbed by their pussies and burned as witches—
To be very clear, for a loser President to convince himself he didn’t lose, he puts millions of Americans in danger and eviscerates things he has no interest in understanding--science and climate. This is not some policy decision as the usual media misunderstands it. It is pathological. Did his father beat him when he was young? Will his head explode if he cannot rewrite history? What accounts for these senile toddler tantrums?
Excuse me, but this is a big deal. We have all been put in danger by these demented Children of the Corn.
Please, politely, call your Congresswoman and shout, “What the fuck!”

A SENSIBLE VIEW here from the esteemed climate scientist KATHARINE HAYHOE Katharine Hayhoe : “Two days ago the US administration announced its plans to break up the National Center for Atmospheric Research - the top weather and climate research institute in the US and arguably the entire world. Nearly everyone who conducts research in climate, atmospheric science, and weather has passed through its doors and benefited from its incredible resources. NCAR supports the scientists who fly into hurricanes, the meteorologists who develop new radar technology, the physicists who envision and code new weather models, and yes - the largest community climate model in the world. That too. That’s why dismantling NCAR is like taking a sledgehammer to the keystone holding up our scientific understanding of the planet.”
AND FROM DANIEL SWAIN (HG 1/10/25) a climate scientist at the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources, [as reported in the LA Times] “it is hard to overstate the importance of the center. ‘There is no other institution like NCAR — not just in this country but really anywhere else in the world,’ Swain said during a briefing Wednesday morning. He feared that no other global institution can absorb the entirety of its expertise.
“Swain also described the administration’s decision as ‘nakedly politically partisan’ in a manner that does not align with public interest. The center’s predictions “aren’t just helpful or convenient — they are life-saving and economy-saving,” he said, adding that shuttering the facility would be “an unbelievable, really genuinely shocking self-inflicted wound to American competitiveness.”
