How to sell a feeling: Bridging the digital-physical gap

We’ve all seen the photos. The wide-angle lens makes a 20-square-meter room look like a suite. The lighting is perfectly golden. The cushions are aggressively plumped.

But photos often fail to tell the whole truth. Photos show a product. Selling a feeling requires something more.

This is the fundamental gap in digital hospitality marketing. How do you digitally convey the sensory richness of a physical space? How do you sell “atmosphere”? When a guest books a venue for a wedding or a major event, they aren’t just buying square meters; they are buying the feeling of the space.

This challenge was the center of a recent experiment. The HosByte project and Virtuality Labs teamed up with Wohls Gård, a historic manor venue where the atmosphere is the main product. Standard photos and videos couldn’t capture the scale, the flow, or the feeling of being there.

We explored what happens when you move beyond flat images and create an immersive 360-degree virtual tour.

The result was more than a digital gimmick. It became a tool for building trust.

Potential clients could virtually walk the space. They could stand in the main hall and understand the flow to the terrace. They could look up and get a real sense of the room’s volume. This moves beyond ‘showing’ a room. It gives the customer control and aligns their expectations with reality.

The worst possible outcome in hospitality is a guest arriving and feeling, “This isn’t what I was promised.”

The virtual tour closes that gap. When a guest books, they are confident. They’ve already “been” there. The technology effectively front-loads the spatial experience, managing expectations long before the physical visit.

This project is a clear example of what we mean by “relationship technology.” The 360-degree tour is high-tech, but its purpose is purely human: to eliminate uncertainty and start the hospitality relationship from a place of trust.

It proves we don’t have to choose between digital efficiency and authentic human connection. We can use the digital tool to set the stage for the human connection, ensuring that when the guest arrives, there is no gap between the promise and the reality.

We documented the entire process, the results, and the key lessons for other operators.
