Things were looking up. The weather had cooled a little. I went out of my way to go to a proper greengrocer and buy a proper fist-sized peach, and ate it the best way - sliced with a sharp knife into finger-sized slithers, sitting in the garden.
In fact, things were looking so bright that I thought I’d put the dogs in their backpack, ride my moped over the bridge, buy a coffee at Hagen, sit in a park and read my new book - a new edition of the love letters of Vita Sackville-West and Virginia Woolf.
The lost I was feeling in my third month back in London was lifting. Riding around London on a moped on a sunny day is joy itself. Riding around London on a moped with the two cutest dogs in the world in a backpack? Joy PLUS the joy of others as you ride by.
I was at the front of traffic at the traffic lights just before Chelsea Bridge. Dogs in backpack. Feeling happy and ridiculous. Feeling glorious.
And then.
