I did not see fireworks this year, but that’s okay. I do not typically celebrate America’s birthday with jingoism and pantomime war, though I do LOVE a federal holiday. I am sitting by a friend’s pool in Michigan watching my boyfriend play with other people’s babies and dogs. My mood is akin to Michelle Buteau’s:
If you ever find yourself in the Michiana corridor of the Midwest, I recommend the sweet pecan rolls of Black Currant Bakehouse in Union Pier, Scoops ice cream and Emma’s pizza in Bridgman, and of course, the cherry-flavored Pit-Spitter Journeyman Whiskey we all covet.

I like being with you all night with closed eyes. What luck—here you are coming along the stars! I did a road trip all over my mind and heart and there you were kneeling by the roadside with your little toolkit fixing something. Give me a world, you have taken the world I was.
I’m in Michigan with family and we made this yummy side last night to go with grilled mains. It’s elote-adjacent, but with a more Mediterranean flavor profile. My mother made blueberry hand pies and a Michigan cherry pie.
On the drive up here, I heard this 2025 single from David Byrne for the first time:
I’ve also been on a Raffi kick lately. Apparently, that’s cyclical for me.
On repeat this month has been Atta Boy’s Walden Pond, which just sounds like the greatest parts of summer to mee.
My friend Jim gifted me three tickets to a sold-out screening with a John Early Q&A on Thursday, which was fun. It’s supposedly a cult classic in the making, according to Early, who asked us as an audience to skip the part where it’s unpopular for ten years before being rediscovered.
It’s a little twisted after school special/Lifetime movie in the vein of a latter-day “Strangers with Candy.” The content was a little tougher than I’d known to anticipate. It’s played kind of seriously, but there’s a significant bulimia storyline, and for those of us who have lost people to eating disorders (or for those of you who have struggled with them), it might be a little hard to watch with a laughing crowd. But I found parts funny, and parts almost genuinely touching. Early acts the hell out of it, as does his frequent collaborator, Kate Berlant.
My friends David and Kelley have dressed their 9-month-old in these adorable, bright, animal-patterned cotton rompers this whole weekend. I am obsessed. I even checked the website to see if they made them in adult female XL sizes, but alas. The next babies I encounter are probably going to get some of these…
The closest thing for adults is probably Lucy & Yak, right?
Anyway, I get nothing from linking these, which bothers my father. Love you all, though; keep sending me good recommendations!
