Felt like at least three distinct movies in one, and it’s a shame that auteurs seem to get less economic with their storytelling in their elder years, but Spielberg is the GOAT for a reason. That was a movie that was. While I found it a little underbaked and the third act basically fell apart—as if a NYC newsroom would ever pick up the phone from Kansas City!—I felt comfortable in the hands of a master director and screenwriter David Koepp, who also wrote a Mission: Impossible and Jurassic Park. Those men know what they’re doing! Glad I saw this one in theaters. Emily Blunt worked her brains out.
Leo Herrera’s newsletter is literally always a good read. I am never sorry I spent time in his brain.
I’m also super delighted to see Claire McFadden, Kim Quindlen, and Will Sonheim collaborating on a tiny webseries (I think natively hosted on Instagram????????????? WHAT?!? I am old) called BEST FRIENDS that is 100% my sense of humor.
This piece is unbelievably gorgeous. I fell in love with it before I realized it was written and performed by the comedian Steve Martin, who (apocryphally?) wrote the piece for Martin Short in honor of his late wife, Nancy.
My mom made this NYT recipe on Monday and gifted me with both some refrigerated batter and several baked cookies I inhaled (ungraciously) on sight. I made the rest of the batter on Tuesday and have been enjoying the vaguely breakfast oatmeal-flavored results since.
And was renewed for a second season. My friend Shannon called the finale twist. What did you think?

I remember when PWB did this for Fleabag and everyone and their mother gifted me a copy (thanks). As a screenwriting adjunct, I LOVE these sorts of bound scripts with commentary and have a growing collection (favorites include the Sense & Sensibility Screenplay and Diaries by Emma Thompson and the annotated Four Weddings and A Funeral published script by Richard Curtis).
Anyway, props to Hachette, Tierney, and Reid for getting their bag.
Love & Basketball played tonight at the Fulton Market Rooftop Cinema! Two Rob Reiner classics on July 14 in Millennium Park! I will be attending as many of these the mosquitoes will allow.
