One of the most persuasive arguments against the existence of God goes by a number of different names. Philosophers call it the Problem of Evil or the Epicurean Paradox, and theologians call it Theodicy. Basically, it says that the existence of an all-powerful and all-loving God is incompatible with a world in which there is so much suffering and evil. The existence of evil means one of three things must be true. 1) God wants to end suffering but cannot because he is not all-powerful. 2) He could end suffering but chooses not to, and therefore God is not all-loving. Or 3) God does not exist.
