Ross Douthat was a conservative opinion columnist at The New York Times for 17 years. In case you didn’t know, The New York Times is not a conservative newspaper. That meant Douthat often advocated views most of his colleagues opposed, and he knew his ideas would face resistance from most New York Times readers, too. By his own admission, Douthat said these ideological and cultural headwinds made him better at his job. If he ever tried to push sloppy arguments or unpersuasive cliches, his critics would pounce.
