Well, I decided to go for it and start a Substack newsletter - primarily, for the time being at least, for announcements about publications and upcoming speaking engagements.
Why Substack? Social media has been getting increasingly antisocial. I’ve been off the platform-formerly-known-as-Twitter for a couple of years, having stepped away to reduce distractions while writing Tolkien’s Faith, and never finding a compelling reason to go back. Now Facebook, though it has its value, is increasingly not fit for purpose with regard to being sure that one’s posts are, in fact, being read by the people who have chosen to follow one’s account. And I’m a subscriber to several other Substack newsletters; I like the format.
Hence this newsletter, so that if you want to hear about my work, you can do so.

I’m very pleased to have a chapter in Life on the Silent Planet: Essays on Christian Living from C.S. Lewis’s Ransom Trilogy. My chapter is “Arthur in Edgestow” and explores the Arthurian elements in That Hideous Strength. I’m particularly happy with how this essay came out because it connects thematically with Michael Ward’s standout essay, “Selling the Well and the Wood: That Hideous Strength and the Abolition of Matrimony.”
Rhys Laverty has done excellent editorial work for this volume, which is published by the Davenant Institute. He has also written the introduction and one essay; other notable contributors include Louis Markos and Christiana Hale. It’s a valuable contribution to the study of Lewis’s science fiction trilogy, and I’m pleased to have it on my shelves as a resource.
And I would be remiss if I didn’t praise the fact that Laverty correctly chose to refer to the trilogy as the Ransom Trilogy, not the “Space” trilogy, for, as Lewis has his character Ransom declare in the first volume, the word ‘space’ is a “blasphemous libel” for the beauties of the Heavens.
