On every table a basket of bread,
warm rays of ruby glint from wine.
The crowd beckons me into the line.
I’m starving alone, won’t take and eat.
Instead of taking in the abundance
I shut down and sluff off any kinship
pick up crumbs with my dry fingertip
in the flicker of a dying candle.
Warm bread and open hearts reach out
and beckon me to eat, drink and delight;
the invitation, like great northern lights,
arcing flashes of color above me.

There is a grace in receiving communion in community. That’s the inspiration for this poem.

There is gratitude in my heart for all of you who make up the Holy Poetry community. Thank you for connecting with me through these poems.

I’d love to hear from you. You can reply to this email or put a comment or heart on this post.

God’s Ear, a poem about hearing confession, will be the focus of our first Sunday of the month poetry discussion (8 p.m. EDT / 5 p.m. PDT).

Paid subscribers will receive a Zoom link in the mail on Sunday. If you have never joined us for one of these evenings of rich spiritual sharing, please do.

On Thursday I sent out a post saying it would be another poem – my mistake.

Here’s the link for God’s Ear.
