When the boys in blue interrogate you
smile like a clam, admit nothing but joy.
Laugh at the curmudgeon with a cudgel
tickle him with the feather of joy.
Distress is the result of too much stress
cease and desist in anything but joy.
Slough off the slough of despond
and slide into the slip of joy.
Shut down the dreary attack chat
be your own maverick of joy.
Don’t listen to the orchestrated outrage
but hum the everlasting ode to joy.
All heaven broke loose when that baby leapt
and shook the earth with its dance of joy.
This life is too much for us to bear
yet you and I are born up by joy.

“Assume Joy” is in the poetic form of a ghazal (rhymes with puzzle.) It is consists of a series of couplets and the last word of each couplet rhymes.

This poem was inspired by the story in the gospel of Luke when the pregnant Mary visits her older cousin Elizabeth, who is also pregnant. Elizabeth tells Mary, “For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leapt for joy.” Luke 1:44

Joy is the infallible sign of the presence of the Holy Spirit. It would be a joy for me to hear from you, let me know what you think with a heart or comment.

May you have a joyful day.

Spread the joy. Share the poem with a friend.
