Recently one of my players had a dilemma and, in character, decided to consult ancestral spirits. I didn’t want to sway his decision, let alone giving the straight answer, so I froze for a second.
But I just started watching Me, Myself and Die! (it’s absolutely brilliant show of solo TTRPGing hosted by talented, creative and experienced Trevor Devall), and it dawned on me: use one of the divination instruments our real-world ancestors used.
The first thing that came to my mind was I Ching, and we flipped virtual coins, and ancestral spirits’ advice was pretty clear. It was fun and immersive for all.
There’s lot of divination instruments you can use: Tarot, Nordic runes, even the now-mundane d6 was considered a will of the gods by Ancient Romans. Just make sure that everyone at the table is ok with that and it’s done in culturally sensitive way.
