So the most confusing CPI of the year is out, and for about ninety seconds, both sides got to be right. Kek.
Headline came in at 3.4% with core easing to 2.5%, and here’s the part almost nobody clocked before the print: the two big consensus panels didn’t even agree on what “expected” meant.
FactSet had a headline at 2.8%, Dow Jones had 3.4%, so the same PDF was simultaneously “hotter than expected” and “exactly in line” depending on which anchor you watched. Krown called that confusion a full day early, and his cut-through number, core month-over-month, printed 0.2%. That’s the odds-fade branch.
And fade they did. September hike odds were near 56% at the start of the month; they’re now roughly 34-36% across Kalshi and Polymarket. Three dissenters wanted a hike, but the tape just took their case away.
As I’m ranting all this chibberish, Bitcoin is at $63.9K. The one level that matters: a daily close back above $64,600 within 48 hours of the print says the low is probably in and $70K opens up, losing $62,500 says the range floor gets stress-tested. Five tags of $65,400 have been rejected in a row; this is attempt six, territory with a macro tailwind for once.
The rest of the macro board is less cozy. Brent oil is holding near $89 after the Hormuz deal died on a demand for fifty years of compensation, the 30-year yield is at levels last seen in 2007, and Trump is floating inflation-indexed capital gains into the midterms.
Meanwhile, the AI tape refuses to blink: CoreWeave beat with a $104 billion backlog, Super Micro guided a monster year, and Nebius grew revenue 454% overnight. More on all of that below.
If you want the full bear case (from a bull) for massive downside, this is my recommended watch of the day, all eight higher-timeframe signals laid out honestly.
And Mayne’s read on the dollar is worth your ears too, DXY is retesting its range from below, and if it rolls over from here, that’s a bullish downside break for everything we own.
