Miguel Balsa Campos · History of Spain

Many people know Spain for its tapas, beautiful beaches, sunny weather and medieval old towns. But most people don’t know that before all of that, before the Empire, the Muslim rule and Roman Hispania, there were already developed local cultures in the Iberian Peninsula.

For the past eight weeks, I’ve been exploring this world in the Ancient Spain series I’m publishing inside History of Spain. Since it’s a complex topic, and new episodes come weekly, I think it’s easy to get lost. Besides that, many people joined the newsletter recently, reaching over 4,600 curious weekly readers in May.

So I decided to put together a free guide that will help you understand clearly the context and follow the series I’m writing. Instead of making a standard Substack post, I made it with a magazine-style design, that you can actually print and enjoy as a physical magazine. It’s the first project of the kind I’m publishing, so I would love to read your opinion in the comment section.

  • a simple introduction to Ancient Iberia before Rome

  • a map of the main peoples and cultural areas

  • a timeline from Prehistory (Atapuerca & Altamira) to Roman Hispania

  • short explanations of Tartessos, Iberians, Celtiberians, Celts, Lusitanians, Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthage and Rome

  • visual pages designed to make the Ancient Spain series easier to follow
