He loved me, too, in days gone by,

And I loved him beneath the sky.

He left in tears, with grief distraught,

While I smiled back and cleared his path.

He loved me, too, though kept unsaid,

Nor hid it quite as feelings spread.

And I loved him, proclaimed and clear,

Yet even my love proved a traitor here.

He loved me, too, though deep or thin,

The shame and scandal weighed us in.

I loved him, too..yet in the end,

Nor loyalty nor cruelty proved a friend.

For those who claim that lovers stand

As bravest souls across the land,

Are liars all, for truth is shown:

The cowards are the lovers known!

Consumed by dread of loss and fright,

Afraid of anger day and night.

We both were deep in love, and yet,

Why did the world claim our regret?

No courage helped, no oath could save,

No promises we swore to grave.

Yet life at last this lesson brings,

Through all the sorrow that it stings:

The love that stays is love indeed,

And lost love answers to the need.

The difference hangs by fragile thread,

Cross it, and all is yours instead;

To lose and yet to triumph still,

That is the heart's enduring will.
