I’ve been paying conscious attention to my dreams for quite some time, writing them down promptly when I wake up, before they disappear. It surprises me how the most vivid dreams, the ones that I just know I won’t forget, somehow fade away so quickly if not captured in words on paper. Amazing when a forgotten dream wafts back during a busy day after hearing a word or phrase spoken, or some other image or action that sparks the dream back into awareness. There’s so much magic in our sleep-time, and in our psyches, working in our favor as we rest in the night.
During stressful times, my dreams mirror that stress and I wake up knowing that I’ve been busy even as I slept. Although the story line of the dream can be absurd, the themes often track whatever I’m dealing with during waking hours.
Sometimes dreams seem to take a wider view, an invitation into new territory. Less processing current life events and more of a “look over here!” energy. My dream last night had a moment like this. I was in some kind of school, so there was busy-ness, and learning, and community. It felt almost crowded but in a close-knit, fun way. There was a moment when I was sitting in class and realized I was naked; my red towel had dropped to my lap and I felt no urgency in raising it to my shoulder and did so while speaking with a friend. The dream had no hint of shame or embarrassment; my nakedness had no emotional charge. Isn’t that cool!?! And powerful! To simply be, without hiding. And without shame. Don’t we tangle ourselves up in our own thoughts and fears a little too much??
Funny enough, sharing the dream is stirring feelings of vulnerability. But it feels important to share it: we’re all in this together, walking each other home. So maybe “my” dream is an invitation for anyone who finds their way to these words to deepen into self-love and self-acceptance, to make yourself - ourselves - comfortable in your/our own skin. What would it be like if we each actually expressed our unique authenticity? To live without hiding. Just an inkling of imagining a world of truly free living feels fun, joyful.
Find an opportunity to let yourself be fully seen and heard, metaphorically naked. Culturally, I think we have a tendency to hide our silliness and playfulness - maybe give that part of you a chance to shine. I’d love to hear about your experience. Or if “my” dream sparks a different thought or interpretation, I’d be very open to hearing about it.
Thanks for being here.
