Cheap, weightless insurance for being found, but only where rescue teams have detectors, and never instead of a satellite communicator.
A RECCO reflector is a battery-free radar tag that makes you searchable to equipped rescue teams when you can’t call for help. After two years with one on my pack and talking to the SAR professionals who train with the detectors: if teams in your area carry them, it’s worth the $40. If they don’t, skip it. Either way, your primary is a satellite communicator; this is the passive backup that answers when every battery is dead.

What I learned in the two years since recommending the RECCO: what SAR teams told me, the documented rescues, and where it falls short.
How It Works
Crack one open and you’d find two foil antennas connected by a diode. No battery, no electronics, no registration. It’s a harmonic reflector, not an RFID tag.
- The detector does the work. Rescuers carry a handheld detector, or fly a helicopter-mounted one, that broadcasts a specific radar frequency (917 MHz).
- The reflector answers. When the signal hits the reflector, the diode doubles the frequency and bounces it back (1834 MHz). The detector hears that answer as a distinct chirp, so rescuers know it’s a RECCO and not a random piece of metal.
- Closer means louder. The stronger the chirp, the closer the searcher is to you. The helicopter detector sweeps about a 300-foot swath and can clear roughly a square kilometer every six minutes.
- False hits happen. Detectors sometimes get weak reflections off phones, radios, and other electronics, even powered off. A real reflector returns a much stronger, cleaner signal, and any ping still gives searchers a clue.
Rescue Record
Has RECCO found anyone? The question that matters, in three parts.
- Documented live saves exist, all in avalanches. A skier in Spain was located alive under the snow in 2015, the first case published in medical literature. Another was found alive under 3.2 meters of snow in Switzerland in 2019. RECCO’s own count is 17 live saves through 2019, mostly in Europe, none in the US.
- Recoveries are more common. Most confirmed finds are body recoveries, including climber Marc-André Leclerc (from the film The Alpinist) in Alaska in 2018, where rescuers who worked the search say RECCO was essential to locating him. That’s worth something on its own: it ends a search and gives a family an answer.
- No documented live save of a lost hiker yet. The technology doesn’t care whether you’re alive, a reflector answers either way. The record is thin on summer rescues because few hikers carry reflectors and detector coverage is still growing. Every SAR professional I’ve talked to says the same thing: the tool works, the bottleneck is people carrying it.
Coverage
A reflector is only useful where someone has a detector. Check before you buy.
- Check the coverage map. RECCO publishes a map of every team and resort with detectors that you can filter by handheld and helicopter units. If nobody near your trails has one, skip it.
- US helicopter coverage is small but growing. Eleven US agencies fly the SAR helicopter detector as of mid-2026, including LA County Sheriff (the only one in California) and a new unit covering the Sierra out of Reno. Hundreds of ski patrols and SAR teams carry handhelds.
- One reflector works everywhere. Detector frequencies vary slightly by country, but the same reflector answers all of them, US and Europe alike.
Carrying It
- You might already own one. RECCO has been sewn into ski jackets, pants, and helmets for over a decade, and it’s now showing up in backpacks and even trail runners. Check your gear for the logo before buying anything.
- Old reflectors don’t expire. There’s no battery to die and nothing to wear out. A reflector in a 2012 jacket works like a new one.
- Placement matters. Anything between the reflector and the detector weakens the signal, including your body, which is mostly water. High on your pack keeps it clear if you’re face down. The other school of thought puts it on your person (a belt loop) in case you’re separated from your pack. Or carry one in each spot.
Be Searchable
The reflector is one layer in a system. If you can’t hit SOS (heart attack, stroke, rockfall), these are the layers that get you found:
- Leave a plan. Send someone your route link and a turnaround time. Searchers start where your plan says, not from the whole mountain.
- Note your RECCO in your emergency details. Add “carrying RECCO reflector” to your inReach or PLB emergency notes and tell whoever holds your trip plan. SAR can only deploy a detector if they know to look for one.
- Turn on tracking. inReach breadcrumbs give rescuers a trail to your last known point.
- The RECCO is the last line of defense. A PLB’s homing beacon and your phone are useless after a few days of battery drain. The reflector still answers.
From the comments: if everyone carries one, how do rescuers know who’s lost? They don’t scan the whole planet. They grid a defined search area for a missing person, and any return in that area gets checked. More reflectors make the tool stronger, not weaker.
Worth $40?
The materials inside are worth maybe $2, and yes, you could technically build one. What you’re paying for is a tested, sealed unit that’s part of a system rescue teams train on, and RECCO reinvests a portion of reflector sales into putting detectors in SAR hands, which is the only way coverage grows.
For me the math is simple: a few grams and $40 for a chance of being found when nothing else on my pack works, and at worst, a faster answer for my family. I’m still carrying mine. If you hike where teams have detectors, it’s cheap insurance. If you don’t, spend the money elsewhere, and check the full gear list for where I’d put it instead.
