iPhone satellite messaging has come a long way, but it doesn’t replace a dedicated inReach when it matters.
The iPhone works in a handful of countries on phone battery while the inReach works worldwide on Iridium for days. I carry both: iPhone for easy messaging when I have coverage, inReach as the device I’d actually trigger an SOS on. For casual hiking in supported countries the iPhone alone is fine; for remote, international, or anything where reliability isn’t optional, get the inReach.

iPhone
I’ve been using Apple’s satellite messaging since it launched and it’s worked well. You won’t always get an instant connection in canyons or dense forest, but the iPhone walks you through where to point and I’m usually connected within a minute or two. Only in the most extreme terrain has it completely failed, and that’s rare.
One key difference from a dedicated device: Apple’s system requires you to manually activate satellite mode, and it won’t work in airplane mode. Since I usually hike in airplane mode to save battery, sending a message means flipping it off, waiting a few seconds, then connecting. Extra step, but manageable.
When you do connect, messages go out fast and land in the standard Messages app, so recipients don’t need anything special. No new interface to learn. It just works.
Tip
Myth: you don’t actually have to point the phone at a satellite. It will still connect when lying on the ground, just slower and less reliably.
inReach
Garmin inReach devices are purpose-built satellite tools, not phones with SOS bolted on. The hardware is waterproof, dust-proof, shock-resistant, and rated for temperature extremes. The battery lasts days, not hours, which matters in a backcountry emergency.
What the inReach adds beyond the iPhone: a dedicated SOS button that works even if your phone is dead, automatic breadcrumb location sharing, satellite weather forecasts, and navigation on some models. The feature I value most is the rugged hardware itself. Buttons with tactile feedback work in rain and cold without fail. No touchscreen to fight. If your life depends on it, the inReach just keeps working where a phone starts to struggle.
Coverage
Apple uses the Globalstar satellite network, which has solid technical coverage across much of the globe, but Apple only enables the service in specific countries due to regulatory restrictions. The regions where SOS works and where messaging works aren’t always the same. They’re expanding, but if you’re headed to remote parts of Alaska, the Andes, or the Himalayas, the service may not be available at all.
Garmin inReach uses Iridium, which provides 100 percent global coverage including the poles. You don’t have to think about which country you’re in. If you can see the sky, it should work. Iridium is the same network used by militaries and professional maritime operators for the same reason: it’s reliable everywhere.
Starlink
Some iPhones now support Starlink’s Direct to Cell service, which lets your phone send standard SMS messages via Starlink when you’re out of cell range. No pointing required. In testing it worked some of the time, but coverage is spotty, message delivery is inconsistent, and replies can arrive out of order. Battery drain is higher than normal since the phone constantly searches for satellites, and like Apple’s system, it doesn’t work in airplane mode.
It’s a decent secondary option that will likely improve, but not something to depend on in the backcountry today.
SOS
Apple’s SOS sends your emergency to a relay center that forwards it to 911 or local emergency services. In many cases that’s enough, but not all 911 centers have backcountry experience. Garmin inReach connects to Garmin Response: a dedicated 24/7 global rescue coordination center staffed specifically for remote and backcountry response.
Apple has designed the SOS flow well. When you trigger an emergency, it walks you through a short questionnaire: injuries, number of people, terrain. That gets bundled with your GPS location and battery level before going to responders, which helps them prepare. Apple has been involved in several high-profile backcountry rescues including helicopter extractions from slot canyons. Garmin has a longer track record, with over 10,000 documented inReach rescues through its dedicated system as of Garmin’s last published milestone.
One benefit of Apple’s approach: if you have any cell signal, even from another carrier, you can often dial 911 directly by voice, which is faster and more familiar than satellite texting. If your iPhone has Medical ID set up, that information is sent automatically during an SOS, giving responders your identity, conditions, and medications before they even contact you. Garmin inReach doesn’t offer this.
Apple Watch
If you’re an Apple Watch user, fall detection adds another layer. If something catastrophic happens and you fall, the watch can trigger an SOS on its own. Apple integrated this with the iPhone’s satellite capability: if your watch detects a fall and the paired iPhone is nearby, the phone will attempt to get help via satellite automatically. It’s a meaningful edge case that a standalone satellite communicator can’t replicate.
Location
With iPhone, you can share your location via satellite through the Find My app, but only when out of cellular range and only when you trigger it manually. No automatic tracking, and contacts need to check your location proactively rather than receiving updates.
Garmin inReach offers automatic breadcrumb tracking that updates at set intervals, letting people at home follow your progress in real time. You can also attach your location to every text message you send. Depending on your Garmin plan, tracking may cost extra, but the functionality is far more capable than what the iPhone offers.
