The most capable Fenix. Best in LTE areas, but it isn’t a handheld inReach replacement.
It’s built for trail runners and those who want LTE messaging and basic satellite coverage without carrying a second device. But in side-by-side testing I saw the Fenix 8 Pro’s LTE drop in clear-coverage areas where an Apple Watch on the same network connected immediately. If you need backcountry-grade coverage, pair a regular Fenix 8 with a Mini 3 Plus for more reliable results.

Fenix 8 vs Fenix 8 Pro
The Fenix 8 Pro and the regular Fenix 8 are essentially the same watch (I’m using the 51mm version). Same processor (reportedly the same as the Fenix 7X per a teardown I found), same UI, same navigation performance. The main differences are the LTE-M modem and the Skylo satellite radio.

Plans
You need a Garmin inReach plan to connect with the Fenix 8 Pro without a phone. Garmin updated their plans to include LTE alongside satellite. LTE usage is unlimited on all plans; the differences between tiers come down to satellite message counts.
Key things to know:
- Unlike standard inReach, coverage is not worldwide: both LTE and satellite are limited to certain regions, unlike traditional inReach with global Iridium coverage
- LTE is unlimited on all plans
- LTE roaming is supported if you subscribed in a different country
- No separate carrier plan needed
- 30-day free trial is available (note: cancels your existing inReach plan if you have one)
- Without a plan, the watch works as a remote for your phone’s Messenger app over Bluetooth
- Garmin now allows multiple active inReach devices per account
Connectivity
The watch connects three ways:
- Through your phone: Bluetooth to phone with data connection, standard operation
- Through LTE-M: low-power cellular for wearables, routes texts and voice calls over an IP address (no dedicated phone number)
- Through satellite: manual trigger required, uses GEO satellites via Skylo
LTE
LTE performance in my testing was inconsistent. Messages and calls went through immediately sometimes. In developed areas with clear signal, it would still fail to connect. I ran side-by-side checks with an Apple Watch (T-Mobile) and every time the Fenix 8 Pro failed, the Apple Watch connected immediately. That’s not a coverage issue, it’s the radio or software.
Two LTE modes worth understanding:
- Always-On LTE: Checks continuously for messages like a standard cellular watch. Battery impact is severe.
- Auto LTE (default): Only checks when you trigger it manually or use an LTE feature. Messages won’t arrive until you actively initiate a check.
The practical problem with Auto-LTE: if someone messages you an emergency at 9am while you’re hiking in LTE range, you won’t see it until you manually run a message check. That’s a significant difference from a standard cellular watch experience. Always-On LTE fixes that behavior but brings the battery down to near Apple Watch Ultra levels.
Satellite
The satellite system is not Iridium. Garmin partnered with Skylo, which connects to geostationary (GEO) satellites from ViaSat and Inmarsat. These sit 22,000 miles above the equator, fixed in position. Traditional inReach uses Iridium low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites at ~485 miles altitude, moving across the globe, covering 100% of it.
What that means practically:
- No 100% global coverage
- Coverage is solid in mid-latitudes, fades toward the poles
- If you can’t connect where you’re standing, you can’t wait for a satellite to pass overhead, since they don’t move
Satellite messages did go through in my testing, but not reliably enough that I’d trust it for SOS. Even under clear skies at 33 degrees north, well within coverage, I’d get full alignment and then sit at “searching” for several minutes, or get “poor signal” without an obvious reason.
inReach Features
What’s available varies by connection type:
- Messages: Location-tagged messages, image receive, SMS to non-Garmin users, predictive text. Voice notes are the standout: recipient gets audio plus a transcription. Only available on LTE.
- Calls: Watch-to-watch only via the Messenger app, not to any number. Mic and speaker quality were good; occasionally the audio was one-sided.
- Location Sharing: LiveTrack auto-tracking worked well over LTE. Satellite has no auto-tracking, so every location share is manual.
- Weather: Excellent over LTE (12-hour, 4-day, radar, air quality). Satellite requires requesting through the phone’s Messenger app.
- SOS: Works on LTE with an active inReach plan. Incident detection only notifies contacts, and Garmin Response is not alerted unless you manually trigger SOS.
Battery
Real-world numbers from my testing:
- GPS activity without LTE: ~1.9% per hour (matches Garmin’s 53-hour spec)
- GPS activity with LTE LiveTrack: ~4.7% per hour (matches Garmin’s 21-hour spec)
- Smartwatch with Auto-LTE, one workout per day, AOD off: 10-15% daily drain
- Smartwatch with Always-On LTE, one workout per day, AOD off: 35-40% daily drain
Always-On LTE puts battery life roughly on par with an Apple Watch Ultra 3. If you’re paying $1,299 for a watch primarily for the LTE connectivity and then running Always-On mode, the battery situation is worth thinking through carefully.
Worth It?
Get the Fenix 8 Pro if you want the most capable Garmin watch and plan to use LTE regularly in areas with coverage.
It makes sense if:
- You don’t want to carry a separate inReach like the Mini 3
- You understand the connectivity limitations
- You’re already in the Garmin ecosystem
- A check of the support forums shows no recent red flags
Skip it if you need dependable backcountry coverage. Handheld inReach units have Iridium global coverage and connect more reliably. Pairing an Enduro 3 or Fenix 8 with an inReach Mini is still lightweight and a more reliable setup.
