I’ve hiked with both in desert sun and shaded rainforest, and the real differences are charging frequency and screen readability. The Enduro goes about three weeks between charges with a MIP screen that’s fine on trail; the Fenix 8 needs more frequent charging but its AMOLED makes maps and shading noticeably sharper.

- Get the Enduro 3 if battery life and comfort are the priority. It focuses on core Garmin features (navigation, tracking, health) without trying to be a smartwatch. I charge mine around every 3 weeks with moderate hiking use.
- Get the Fenix 8 if you want the AMOLED screen and smartwatch features like call handling and voice assistant. Battery life is still solid for a watch of its type, and the maps are noticeably sharper.
- Also worth considering: get the UltraFit Nylon band from the Enduro and put it on a Fenix 8. I have this combo and it’s very comfortable.
- The Forerunner 970 is worth a look if you want AMOLED and training features at a lower price point without needing multi-week battery.
Battery
The biggest difference between these two is battery. The Enduro 3’s MIP screen and efficient architecture give it a major advantage. I charge it around every 3 weeks with moderate hiking use. More time in direct sunlight means longer between charges.
Solar doesn’t charge it to full. It offsets drain. Garmin measures solar input in lux hours, and you need around 50,000 lux hours to offset roughly 1% of battery. Pointing it straight at the sun is ideal; on your wrist in and out of shade you’ll get significantly less. Still, it adds up over a multi-day trip.
The Fenix 8 AMOLED can’t touch that. AMOLED draws more power, especially with Always-On off. Expect to charge it every 5-10 days depending on how much you’re tracking.

Screen
The Fenix 8 AMOLED has 64,000 colors, 1000 nits of brightness, and 454x454 pixel resolution. Maps look sharp and detailed. Slopes show up with both contour lines and shading. I’ve seen complaints about it washing out in direct sun, but I didn’t find that to be an issue in my testing.
I don’t make serious navigation decisions on a watch screen, but the extra detail does give me a better read of surrounding terrain at a glance.
To maximize battery on the Fenix 8, I use gesture mode: screen stays off until you raise or flick your wrist. There’s a slight wake delay, longer than an Apple Watch, but you get used to it.
The Enduro 3 uses a transflective MIP screen that’s always on. It relies on ambient light, so it looks great in bright sun. In shade or low light you’ll use the backlight. The screen is sharper than older Garmin MIP displays like the Fenix 7 or Enduro 2, but side by side with the Fenix 8 it looks washed out: 64 colors and 280x280 resolution.
For reading numbers and navigating trails it’s fine. When I wore both at the same time, I always looked at the AMOLED first. Nicer experience, but not mission-critical outdoors.
Comfort
On paper the Enduro 3 is only a few grams lighter than the 51mm Fenix 8, but it feels significantly lighter on the wrist. Better balance, and the nylon UltraFit band is a big part of why. The velcro closure gives precise tension and dries fast. I liked it enough to buy one for my Fenix 8, and it made a real difference.
The QuickFit silicone strap Garmin ships with the Fenix is fine, but it’s nothing special. If you end up with a Fenix, grab the UltraFit nylon band.
Stability
When the Fenix 8 launched, it had more bugs than the Enduro 3. The Enduro wasn’t perfect, but it was noticeably more stable out of the box. After several firmware updates both are generally reliable.
Garmin still has a habit of introducing quirks with updates, and the Fenix’s added complexity makes it more exposed to those. The Enduro feels simpler and a bit more immune.
- Both watches have the LED flashlight. Surprisingly useful in camp; drains battery if you leave it running.
- Both run the same Garmin UI, mapping, tracking, and health features. Core navigation is identical. The Fenix 8 adds a mic and speaker for calls and voice assistant when your phone is nearby, plus dive support.
- I’ve used the voice assistant on the Fenix to engage Siri when my phone is buried in my pack. It works, but it’s nowhere near as integrated as a Pixel or Apple Watch. Dive support only matters if you need it. For hiking and backpacking, neither extra changes the decision.
