The human urge to be completely alone but also in one another’s company to talk about important issues face to face should be studied, and is on poetic overdrive this week. In addition to #BigSummerGroupShow action and several creative-campus Open House gatherings, a series of readings, conversations, book events, playwrights in session, and live performances activate multiple senses and shimmering new aspects of our shared understandings—from Lucky Cat Gallery, CAAM, LAND, MAK, LACP, Bel Ami, The Nimoy, Blue Roof, The Reef, REDCAT, Villa Aurora, The Loved One, and Night Gallery.

And speaking of which, our supporting subscribers brunch is this Sunday, August 30! All the details are at the end of the calendar (on the other side of the paywall, sorry not sorry, wly). And remember, rsvp or it didn’t happen!

Three-Hour Window opens Saturday, August 29, 6-10pm at Lucky Cat Gallery. Bekka Koontz curates a #BigSummerGroupShow worthy of these long, hot days under our infinite blue canopy. Three-Hour Window brings together more than 40 artists to map the psychic and physical topographies of SoCal through contrasting visual languages, ranging from sun-baked desert plein-air painting and mythic portraiture, to urban photography and fantastical allegory. With a culture this sprawling and cosmically diverse, a neat, singular civic narrative does not exist; instead, the massive roster leans into the friction, isolation, and cinematic fluidity of our desert-dry, mountain-ringed coastal existence, treating the region as a porous portal rather than a fixed destination. That exploratory spirit manifests on opening night with a pair of artist-led Cut & Paste collage workshops hosted by Julia Walck, inviting visitors to slice and reassemble source materials drawn from the exhibition’s visual lexicon.
