Summer is alive and well. Canadians and Bosnians alike are taking the streets by storm in Toronto. Monoculture has returned. Patios are full to bursting and the city is aglow with collective effervescence. And, of course, Hidden Rivers takes to the streets in a matter of days. Let’s get right to it.
I am thrilled to announce the return of Toronto’s 12,000 Year History, an interdisciplinary seminar on the history of Toronto. In this 5-week course, we alternate between city excursions and discussions of foundational texts. It is a space to rigorously study Toronto’s past while meeting, and becoming, the people shaping its future.
Applications are open now and are reviewed on a rolling basis before the deadline of June 26th. The course is currently at 50% capacity; I expect all the spots to fill within the next week, so act fast!

We will be running two cohorts this summer. One group will meet on Wednesdays at 6:30pm, the other on Thursdays at 6:30pm, beginning July 15/16 in a classroom at the University of Toronto. Both groups will then convene Sundays 10am–1pm for excursions around the city.

As tourists flood into Toronto this summer, it’s more important than ever that we collectively understand what defines our city at its core: our ecological inheritance, our geological wonder, our singular immigration story. I am hoping these tours can play a small part in this universal basic civic education.
Whether I see you at an upcoming tour, in class at Toronto’s 12,000 Year History, or on the street exchanging a knowing nod, I cannot wait to bask in the joy of Toronto summer together.
