The Big-League Secret to Better Bullpens: 3 Ways to Accelerate Youth Development

Rob Regan · HeyBLU: Big League Umpire

I’ve stood in three different spots on a baseball diamond where a bad strike zone ruins your day: in the dugout as a Little League coach, in the stands as a dad watching my 10-year-old hit, and on the mound myself in the MSBL. Different vantage points, same frustration — an inconsistent strike zone slows progress. How can you learn the zone when it moves wildly from game to game, and even pitch to pitch?

That frustration is why we built HeyBLU: an iPhone app that calls balls and strikes instantly with just an iPhone and a tripod.

Here’s the insight that got us started: MLB hitters and umpires today have noticeably better plate discipline than their counterparts 20 years ago. That’s not an accident — it’s the product of relentless reps combined with instant, objective feedback from technology. Pitch tracking, replay review, Statcast — the pros have had this for years.

Our goal was to close that gap without requiring stadium-grade hardware or a five-figure budget.

Whether you’re running a team practice or working in the backyard, here are three ways players and coaches can use HeyBLU:

1. Internalizing the Strike Zone (Hitters and Umpires)
Not just for pitchers. Set the app up during a bullpen, have hitters stand in the box and track every pitch. Amateur umpires can do the same thing — training their eye on live pitches with instant, unbiased results. Learn what a strike looks like versus what a strike actually is. All it takes is a tripod and an iPhone

.

2. Building True Command (Pitchers)
When I’m on the mound — or working with our Little League staff — hearing an instant, automated “Ball” or “Strike” the moment it crosses the plate is a game-changer on its own. But the real value is the bullpen report: every pitch charted against a 9-zone grid, giving you a number to beat next time out. No more guessing your strike rate. Pair that with HeyBLU’s Command Center — where you select a target before the pitch and get a hit-or-miss results on the spot and an “Own the Zone” report after the session. Youth pitchers and their coaches who take training seriously have an elite tool at their finger tips.

3. Reclaiming Practice Bandwidth (Coaches)
Intersquad scrimmages and live at-bats usually force a coach into umpire duty — which means every close pitch (and plenty of not-so-close ones) becomes a debate where everyone saw something different. Put an iPhone on a tripod, and that job disappears. Coaches get to coach. Players get to focus on their craft

.

Technology shouldn’t complicate the game — it should buy back time for development. That’s the whole idea behind HeyBLU: help Little Leaguers train like big leaguers.

BLU stands for Big League Umpire. That’s the standard we’re chasing.
