MLB Hitters Know the Strike Zone Because They've Seen It 10,000 Times. Your 12U Hasn't.

Here’s what the MLB ABS debate is missing:

Everyone is focused on the umpires. Are they getting it right? Should robots replace them? How many calls did CB Bucknor get overturned?

But watch the hitters.

When Aaron Judge or Kyle Schwarber challenges a call and wins by a tenth of an inch, they’re not surprised. They knew. They’ve seen that pitch 5,000 times. The robot just confirmed what their eyes already told them.

MLB hitters don’t need ABS to know the strike zone. They’ve earned that knowledge through tens of thousands of reps against the best pitchers and umpires in the world.

The robot is just a second opinion.

He doesn’t have 10,000 reps.

He has maybe 200 at-bats a year. A bullpen session here and there. Whatever the 14-year-old umpire feels like calling on Saturday.

One week the zone is nose to ankles. Next week it’s a postage stamp. The umpire is guessing half the time. The pitcher is spraying the ball. And your hitter is supposed to develop an eye?

He can’t. Nobody could.

Game day becomes a crap shoot. Not because the kids aren’t trying. Because the signal is buried in noise.

More reps. Consistent reps. Reps that match—or at least approximate—what they’ll actually see.

That’s it. That’s the whole secret.

You don’t need a million-dollar TrackMan. You don’t need a lab. You need an iPhone, a tripod, and a strike zone that a coach can dial in to something close to Saturday’s reality.
