An Ode to the Bucket Parent

Rob Regan · HeyBLU: Big League Umpire

A sharp pop echoes off the garage door, the backstop or the backyard fence in the fading twilight. The scuffed pitcher’s toe, the makeshift mound, and the bruised shin.

This is for the parents on the bucket.

You see them all over TikTok and Instagram—accounts with names like “bucketdad101”—sitting on a flipped-over Home Depot bucket, catching pitch after pitch.

But it’s not just the dads. It’s the moms, too. The parents who just got home, who haven’t eaten dinner, but who still look at their kid holding a scuffed-up ball and say the magic word:

“Yes.”

“Yes, grab your glove.” “Yes, let’s hit the driveway.” “Yes, let’s go down to the local field before it gets too dark.”

You are the unofficial, unpaid, uncertified bullpen catchers of youth sports. You catch hundreds of pitches on a Tuesday and thousands over a season. You drag yourselves to tryouts, sit through scorching weekend tournaments, and spend your evenings squatting on hard plastic just so your son or daughter can perfect that changeup.

You take the wild pitches to the mask if you even wear one. You take the bounced balls to the you know where. You try to frame pitches that are two feet off the plate just to build their confidence, and you offer quiet corrections when their mechanics fall apart.

You aren’t doing it because you want the glory. You’re doing it because when your kid looks back on their playing days, they won’t just remember the strikeouts or the trophies. They will remember who was sitting on the other end of the pitch. They will remember that when they wanted to get better, you were there.

At HeyBLU, we see you. We know that the technology doesn’t make the ballplayer—the reps do. And those reps don’t happen without the parents willing to put on the mask, sit on the bucket, and say yes.

Here is to the bruised shins, the dusty knees, and the parents who build the next generation, one pitch at a time.

Built for the driveway, the local field, and the bucket parent. HeyBLU is an iOS app that instantly calls balls and strikes out loud using just your iPhone camera.
