Hello Earthling family,
Elio has been deep in a role play era lately and I am here for every second of it. Little stories appear from nowhere, characters arrive with full personalities and opinions, and suddenly we are all assigned roles whether we agreed to them or not. This week I was a leaf. Last week a tractor. I didn’t ask questions.
There is something so pure about watching a child disappear into make believe. After seeing Toy Story 5 I don’t think any of us need convincing that play is not a small thing. It is how children make sense of the world, build empathy, process feelings and quite honestly keep the rest of us young.
This morning we made our bug puppets together at the kitchen counter while breakfast was happening around us. Elio was cutting with some help from me while Andrew was cooking eggs. By the time we left for his nature summer camp the bugs had names and backstories. On the way out the door I promised him we’d find a cardboard box tonight and build them a theatre. …
