Dear friend on Sunday morning,

Thank you for a beautiful week in Elul. The season of return is not over, the month continues all the way to the High Holy Days, so carry those words with you. But your requests have piled up in the meantime, more verses you long to read in Hebrew, and this week belongs to you again. Here is a look at the doors we will open, and the small Hebrew surprise waiting in each.

• Isaiah 26:3, “you keep him in perfect peace.” Requested by Jose. “Perfect peace” is one Hebrew word said twice, and the secret to it is a verb that means to lean. (Tonight.)

• Isaiah 6:3, “Holy, holy, holy.” Requested by Ethan. Hebrew almost never repeats a word three times. This is the one place it does, and it matters.

• Isaiah 53:5, “by his stripes we are healed.” Requested by Margaret, and Nancy. The Suffering Servant, in the language the prophecy was written in.

• Genesis 15:1, “I am your shield, your very great reward.” Requested by Misun. The first time God calls himself a shield, and the word is worth holding.

• Psalm 73:25-26, “God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Requested by Cheri. The Hebrew for “portion” is what the tribe of Levi got instead of land: God himself.

• Matthew 11:28-29, “Come to me... and I will give you rest.” Requested by Jamee. The Hebrew behind “rest,” and the surprising thing a “yoke” was for.

• Micah 6:8, “do justly, love mercy, walk humbly with your God.” Requested by Virginia. Three Hebrew verbs, and the last one is quieter than it sounds.

And close behind them: 2 Corinthians 5:17, “a new creation”, Requested by Sean; Ezekiel 43:2, “his voice like the sound of many waters”, Requested by Georgia; Psalm 19:1, “the heavens declare the glory of God”, Requested by Dusty; Psalm 121:5, “the LORD is your keeper” Requested by, Maurene; John 17, “that they may be one”, Requested by Susan; and Psalm 51:4, Requested by Anna.
