New research from Adelaide University is looking for better ways to treat chronic visceral pain. That’s the deep internal pain that can happen with IBS, as well as with inflammatory bowel diseases and endometriosis.
The research goal is not to mask the pain, but to understand why the gut and organ pain nerves become overactive in the first place.
The researchers are studying hypersensitive nerve pathways and they aim to test new therapies designed to interrupt pain signals before they reach the brain and spinal cord.
As someone who has IBS pain so severe I’ve blacked out from it, let me just say how amazing that would be!
The program will use IBS as well as IBD and endometriosis models. It is going to explore novel treatments such as venom-derived peptides (venom from what?! they don’t say) and engineered proteins.
Chronic IBS pain is real. It can come from overactive gut-brain pain pathways, and if we’re lucky, future treatments may be able to switch off those pain signals at their source. Fingers crossed…
