Two bills moving through the legislature are bad enough on their own, but if passed in conjunction create a nightmare for minor consent in Louisiana.
HB775 by Representative Emily Chenevert lowers the age of medical consent from 18 to 17, allowing minors to consent to medical treatment without parental involvement.
HB1249 by Representative Steven Jackson expands school-based healthcare and behavioral health services while reducing parental oversight and notification - in what other setting would a parent typically drop a child off for medical evaluation or treatment and later pick them up with limited knowledge of what occurred?
Together, these bills create a dangerous pathway for minors to access medical and mental health services at school without meaningful parental involvement.
Parents should not be excluded from healthcare decisions involving their children.
Take Action: Support & Amend HB926
HB926 by Rep. Bayham is moving forward — but amendments are needed before final passage.
This legislation protects a fundamental principle:
Medical decisions belong to individuals — not the government.
HB926:
Prohibits government medical mandates
Prevents discrimination based on medical status
Protects access to public services, employment, and transportation
Ensures healthy individuals cannot be excluded from public life
Important amendments are still needed:
Remove language excluding medical masks from the definition of medical devices
Separate R.S. 17:170 from child welfare laws
These changes are necessary to strengthen the bill and avoid unintended consequences.
