Where Callisto came from

About eight years ago, I came up with a concept for a story, so naturally I went to the only place an inexperienced writer with a dream goes to—Wattpad.

I began writing the story of a girl named Callisto, who was raised by her mother and older brother. On Callisto’s 18th birthday, she discovered she had magic. Her mother sits her down and explains they have magic in their blood and that she wanted Callisto to grow up safe and far away from other people in fear of what others would do. Though it was obvious her mother wasn’t telling her the whole story, she didn’t pry.

Not long after, while Calli walks along the beach at night, she is attacked. The terrifying man claims she smells like the person he has been searching for on Earth. Despite her fear, the appearance of the white-haired man stunned her. The massive horns adorning his head struck fear into her heart, and his golden eyes peered into her soul.

Everything he says sounds crazy and outlandish, or it would have if she hadn’t discovered that very morning that magic was real, and she had it. Convinced she has a connection to this mysterious “being” he’s hunting, he kidnaps her.

Calli learns the man’s name is Kai, and he is a hunter for something called The Celestial Council. He takes her from her home with the intention of using her as bait. She doesn’t make it easy for him, fighting him at every turn when he demands she eat, sleep, or change clothes. Constantly threatening him, knowing her brother is searching for her.

The idea was a forced proximity enemies-to-lovers story.

Over time, Kai begins to take an interest in her, asking questions about her magic. When she admits she doesn’t know how to use it, he decides to teach her. He is cocky and refers to her as a pest, and she matches his energy right back.

For the first time, she sees a softer side of him. Despite disliking him, she is grateful for his help. As he teaches her, he tells her why he is here and about his mission. Calli, though taken aback, listens to his stories of a dangerous being wanted for murdering countless of his kind. She finds herself beginning to respect him, or at least his mission.

Sadly, I can’t tell you more, as it would actually spoil the next two books.

Obviously, this is vastly different than Haunting the Hunter. The story evolved over time, but the elements are all there. I kept deleting and restarting the story over the years because I just felt like something was missing.

Until about a year ago, I was struck with the final missing piece.

The reader.

I didn’t want to write another romance. I wanted to give my readers an experience. Something I wish I had more time to execute. But the idea was already out there, and the love and support I got was beyond what I could have imagined.

The story I worked so hard on I will finally get to tell, but under a completely different light. This story was called Claimed by Divinity, which I’m very proud to say is book two in The Divine Duet, the next duet after The Bound Duet.

I won’t lie, I don’t have everything perfectly planned out, but I know these characters have continued to take the wheel and drag me through their stories, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Callisto and Kai are dear to my heart. And if you got this far, then just know that I am where I am because of all of you. I love how Calli and Kai are now, but I figured I would share their original story and how they came to be who they are now.
