Stay Put Sunshine is the 2024 EP by Dublin-based indie band, Big Sleep. It is a mellow album of just six songs that relaxes the listener from start to finish, making them feel at ease after a long day.

One of the strongest aspects of the album is its ability to blend old and new indie influences, taking inspiration from bands such as Big Thief and The Strokes.

The vocals carry 2000s indie confidence, bringing charisma that is Alex Turner-esque. The arrangement of the instruments are more similar to other, newer indie artists, giving the music a fresh and contemporary edge.

When listening to Stay Put Sunshine, it is the bass work that stands out to me. It is far from a background instrument, instead guiding the music, filling much of the space in the songs and providing a strong foundation for everything else to work around it.

The album demonstrates the difference between a good bassist and a really great one. Whilst a good bassist is able to support the band and 'do a job', a great one adds real movement to the songs, and is able to separate their sound from the other instruments.

This movement of the bass on Stay Put Sunshine allows the guitar to shine. The guitar has a clean, jangly tone that adds brightness to the songs, something that is a key part to the albums identity.

There is no need for the guitars to fill the space thanks to the bass doing much of the heavy lifting. This allows it to lean into their clean tone without fear of losing the songs strength.

Combined with upbeat drumming rhythms, the result is a sound that is light and inviting, perfectly suited to the laid-back mood the album is designed to deliver.

Even when the energy levels rise, Big Sleep never abandon their core sound. The drums and guitars largely retain their clean nature, ensuring every track remains smooth and easy to listen to.

Overall, Stay Put Sunshine is a beautifully crafted album that combines mellow rhythms with relaxing tones.

Rather than relying on big dramatic moments, Big Sleep focus on creating an atmosphere that relaxes the listener, guides them through the album and eases them off on a warm summers evening.
