“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.”
— Søren Kierkegaard

Looking back on my life, I can almost divide it into chapters—not by the years, but by the lessons.

There was a chapter where I had to learn to let go. Another where I had to trust myself. Another where I had to become comfortable with uncertainty. At the time, none of them felt like lessons. They simply felt like life challenges.

It was only years later that I realized those difficult seasons had quietly shaped who I was becoming.

When we’re in the middle of a challenge, we’re usually focused on getting through it. We want the uncertainty to end, the relationship to work out, or the problem to disappear. We rarely stop to ask what this season might be teaching us.

Yet looking back, many of the qualities we value most in ourselves — our confidence, resilience, courage, patience, or self-trust — were developed during seasons we never would have chosen.

We usually ask ourselves questions like, “When will this get better?” or “How do I fix this?”

But perhaps we should also ask: “What is this season trying to develop in me?”

We’ve created a short assessment to help you reflect on the inner skill your current season of life may be inviting you to strengthen. Because sometimes, changing the question changes how we experience the journey.
