Hannah Connolly · Notes On 💌

Let me set the scene. You follow someone on Instagram, on TikTok, on Substack. They post cute carousels with stars and glitter, pastel-blocked words that remind you that you are young and hot and life is long and you are, basically, going to be okay. They might also post their writing; their reflections on pop culture, right now, or their innermost diary-like entries of how it feels to be chronically lonely, or chronically ill, or both. They showcase their writing in ways palatable for the algorithms they feed: short snippets, aesthetic fonts. Their work seems to speak directly to you: woman to woman, girl to girl, cheek to cheek. In the world of ai-slop and anti-intellectualism, they give you hope.

Except: these posts are just another iteration ai-slop.

*(I wrote the rest of this piece out by hand, bc AI could simply never. Scroll down for the full piece).

Here are some of my favourite writers on here. Follow them for human-written, human-edited, un-AI-ified writing. In the comments, please let me (and other writers) know what you’d like from us <3 <3 <3 LOVE YOU!!

This is not an essay about the complex, nuanced world of AI. This is a short piece about my personal experience as a writer and creator in this space. If you’d like my thoughts on AI more generally – and how it intersects with art – let me know.

  • An intro letter

  • Favourites + culture corner sections

  • ‘What I Did vs. What I Pinned’

  • A reader requested piece on burnout and how to make sure your job doesn’t take over your life

  • A glimmer calendar

  • (and more)

AND NONE OF IT WAS WRITTEN BY AI!!!!

Thank you SO MUCH for supporting. It means more than I could ever say!
