Eleanor Doughty · Hand to Paper

One more (?) handwritten post from my summer travels — this one is from a valley in Ticino, a southern canton of Switzerland where Italian is the official language.

I had the best time at USk Week in Intragna a few weeks ago (where these notes are from): teaching urban sketching with 3 other instructors, jumping in crystal-clear rivers, painting, sweating buckets, taking harrowing bus rides through the mountains, and eating tons of risotto. I love the concept of a more slow-travel, intimate kind of sketching symposium (with afternoon swimming built in to the itinerary). Highly recommend it.

And now I’m back in Seattle after 3 weeks abroad, scanning everything I made (2.5 sketchbooks filled!) and catching up on life in general. I just added those sketchbooks to my Gumroad page where you can download PDFs.

My tri-annual newsletter is going to go out in the next week or two — sign up if you want first dibs on upcoming workshops, new originals & prints in the shop, and/or are curious about what I have going on generally in my art practice!

Finally, I self-published a new book, A Walk in the Market — a collection of my 30 favorite sketches from the last 9 years in Seattle’s Pike Place Market. Limited to 100 copies.

There is a map corresponding to every sketch/page in the book…
… and each page has a little blurb about the place — some are suggestions about what to eat or drink at certain stops, some are observations about the sketch itself.

In the ~artisanal spirit~ of the Market, I sourced & produced everything locally and DIYed it as much as possible: the cover is risograph printed, and it’s bound by hand. Here’s a presentation about the process & inspiration behind it (it’s a bit mystical 🔮).

Ciao, tschüs, hasta luego.
