There was a hard day last week where we all went to bed sad. Nothing crazy happened, just sometimes things are hard and sometimes there are problems you can’t fix for your kid. So with nothing left for us to do we all hit the hay frustrated.
I woke up at 4am with spiraling brain. Thoughts were just swirling around and trying to solve all the problems. I couldn’t get back to sleep and ended up with a prayer of desperation, “God please surround Elliott with your angels.” This prayer of last resort is one that was imparted to me by my Mom. I can hear her in my head saying “PLEASE surround Haley with your angels” when she was at a loss for what to do with me, which was often. lol.
As I finally started drifting to sleep I hear little Elliott’s voice call out about something he could hear in our back yard. So we all got up and looked outside to see three raccoons climbing all over our backyard. We sat there for an hour in the middle of the night and delighted in their masked faces lying around and then chasing each other. It was the weird gift we all needed and my favorite kind of answered prayer, immediate and ridiculous.
I guess sometimes angels are disguised as raccoons.
Things Worth Sharing
I’m still reading A Gentleman in Moscow. I had a hard time getting into it, but now I don’t want it to end. It’s about a Count who is sentenced to live his life in a hotel after the Bolsheviks take over Russia. It’s about a whole life lived within very small physical quarters, but his life still feels very large. I also just saw that there is a TV series based on the book.
We’ve been eating so many beans around here, so I kind of feel like I need this bean embroidery kit.
Jason and I have been obsessed with getting 10,000 steps a day and it made me remember this hilarious article by David Sedaris about getting his Fitbit.
