2. open mics / coping with heavy days

If you are subbed to this newsletter, it’s because we met or you’ve very intentional sought out my artistic work, which I appreciate a lot.

If you’ve been a long time reader of Hot Literati , then you may have read some of my work where I’m very open about my struggles with grief and depression, but in response to those things I always turn to my faith and music.

I’ve played the piano on and off for most of my life, mostly simple stuff just to accompany myself. I wrote music as a kid before I wrote any essay or literary writing, but that young I tore everything up knowing that what I was writing was very naive.

Now, I’m 25 and I’ve been playing open mics and such around different places for about a year or so. I’ve played/sang in Kansas, New York, and most recently and very spontaneously in Scotland. I tried to sing in Paris, but the woman curating the night didn’t think I new enough of the standard Jazz songbook, which I sort of took as God pushing me to perform more original stuff.

I just got home from an open at Lucinda’s in the East Village today, and will be playing at one in Starr Bar in Brooklyn tomorrow ~ 6:30.
