Tucked into a lush canyon at the crossroads of the Sierra Madre, the Sonoran Desert, the Chihuahuan Desert, and the Rocky Mountains, Ramsey Canyon holds a remarkable secret.
With rolling grasslands, forested mountains, and mild winters, southeastern Arizona has become a true haven for bird lovers. More than 500 bird species call this region home. Hummingbirds can be seen year-round, while specialties like the Gray Hawk, Red-faced Warbler, and Vermilion Flycatcher are all within easy reach of Tucson.
From April through September, birders flock to Ramsey Canyon to observe these dazzling creatures in action.
The canyon is especially famous for its hummingbirds — including Anna’s and the rare white-eared hummingbird. During peak season in August, as many as 14 species dart and shimmer through the canyon at once. It’s a breathtaking sight you won’t soon forget.
The scenic Hamburg Trail, which follows Ramsey Creek, offers an ideal starting point for bird-watching. Beyond hummingbirds, the canyon hosts over 130 bird species. Songbirds migrate through the area, while elegant trogons and even golden eagles make appearances.
Even outside peak season, you’ll still encounter species like sapsuckers, kinglets, and juncos — making Ramsey Canyon a year-round destination for nature enthusiasts.
To make the most of your visit, stop by the preserve’s nature center. You’ll find helpful exhibits identifying local species, a cozy bookstore, and a dedicated hummingbird observation area — perfect for close-up viewing.
Ramsey Canyon Preserve is open Thursday through Monday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (November through February hours may vary). The preserve is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.
Admission is $6 per person, with discounts available for members and local residents. Children under 16 are free, and admission is free for everyone on the first Saturday of each month.
