UPDATE: Here are the prices Diane Keaton’s storied wardrobe fetched at the Bonhams auction:
I CAN be sure of one thing when I die: My clothing will be placed—gently, I hope—in bags and delivered to Goodwill or some women’s shelter. They certainly will not be sold to the highest bidder at auction.
But some of Diane Keaton’s outfits will be, at a Bonhams auction—”Diane Keaton: Tailored & Timeless”—that ends June 9; you can place online bids now.
It must be said that Keaton’s signature androgynous look requires full commitment. Just looping a necktie around your white shirt collar isn’t going to get you to a full Annie Hall. Nope. If that’s your goal, you need the oversize coat and the hat; never forget the hat. You’ll need the heavy lug-sole shoes. And the woman doesn’t seem to have found a combat boot she didn’t like.
As with most auctions, the sale starts off modestly, with items of lesser value, but eventually you’re off to the races: A Cartier stainless-steel Tank Française watch has already been bid up to $14,000. And Annie Hall wannabes (Is that a thing?) may well bid up the better clothing items beyond their estimates.
If a full-on Annie Hall is not your goal, there are “curated” groups of neckties, berets (many more than I thought one woman could wear), belts wide and narrow, chunky strings of (costume) pearls, batches of “punk inspired” jewelry and accessories, many, many pairs of eyeglasses (some of them prescription), gloves and hats and suspenders—242 lots in all.
So . . . what’s on tap? Here’s a very small sample:
A Ralph Lauren Purple Label Black Tailcoat and Pants
UPDATE: According to Bonhams, this Ralph Lauren outfit sold for $8,320, including the auction house premium.
Anyone could pull this evening outfit off—at least anyone who wears a size 6 jacket (the pants have no marked size). The lot (#2004) also includes a white shirt and a second pair of black Ralph Lauren tuxedo trousers. The estimate given is $1,500 to $2,000, but 30 early bids have already taken it up to $4,000.
A Black-and-White Ensemble
UPDATE: I’m not finding this outfit in the final Bonhams “sold” list. The Wall Street Journal reported that all the Keaton lots were sold, so maybe this outfit was pulled from the sale or didn’t achieve its reserve price—or my eyes need checking.
This is the outfit Keaton wore when she accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute in 2018. The whole getup is a bit of a muchness, but you’d never mistake it for anyone else’s style. The lot (#42) includes a Nick Fouquet black felt hat, a white quilted coat, a pleated skirt and petticoat plus black fingerless gloves. Keaton styled it with a black ribbon instead of a belt (neither included in the lot). The estimate is $1,500 to $2,000.
A Polka Dot Skirt and Belt
UPDATE: The skirt and belt above sold for $5,120, including the auction house premium. The polka-dot Adidas “Superstar Sneakers” mentioned below went for $1,408, again including premium.
Given Keaton’s rather severe look, this outfit seems downright giddy. She wore the full polka dot skirt in her 2014 film And So It Goes. This lot (#2090) comes with a white petticoat to keep those polka dots flouncing, plus the white shirt and wide black belt. Bids have reached $550 (the estimate was $300 to $500). Note that the lot right before it, #2089, is a pair of size 10 polka-dot sneakers! Black and white, of course—Adidas “Superstar Sneakers.” Bids have already taken the shoes to $600, above the more modest $100 to $200 that was the estimate.
A Custom Thom Browne Ensemble
UPDATE: Another no-show in the list of final results.
This brown seersucker suit with matching necktie, custom made by Thom Browne for Keaton, who was after all mad about menswear, shows a possible downside to pouring money into what is essentially used clothing: Auction notes point out that the jacket has “some scattered spots” and a lipstick stain on the edge of the lapel (but it’s Diane Keaton’s lipstick stain!). The Stephen Jones straw bowler hat and size 8 Brooks Brothers white shirt are part of the lot (#45). As of Saturday night, six bidders were watching the group, but two bids had taken the price only to $110, far below the $3,000 upper estimate.
Baron Black Felt Bowler Hat
UPDATE: The custom cream-color Baron hat mentioned below went for $10,240. A couple of other hats sold in a wide range of prices, from about $3,500 to $20,480 (for a Nick Fouquet wide, heavy-curl-brim felt hat). There’s no result shown for Keaton’s “faded” hat, above.
Baron Hats (“Hollywood’s Hat Maker”) created Keaton’s signature hat, the bowler, donned in Annie Hall. But this hat (lot #13), albeit slightly faded, according to the auction-house notes, was one she reached for again and again in real life. So far the hat has attracted a few low bids ($25), but nine bidders are watching the item, and it may indeed reach its $400 to $600 estimate. Another Baron hat, a custom cream-color felt bowler, has already exceeded its $500 high estimate after 26 bids (and 20 more people watching), $700.
A Céline Blazer and Balmain Skinny Jeans
UPDATE: This Céline/Balmain outfit sold for $4,864.
Keaton didn’t wear just any old black coat. Lot #2176 is a Céline wool-and-cashmere long blazer with the nipped-in waist that was one of her signatures. And the skinny jeans that are part of the lot are from Balmain. The estimate is $400 to $600, but almost two dozen bidders have already taken it up to $850.
A Pair of Gucci Combat Boots
UPDATE: The Gucci boots above sold for $1,792.
Yes, one of 10 pairs of chunky lace-up footwear (from Prada, Vuitton, Doc Martens, Chloé and others). These Gucci Combat Boots (lot #2016, $200 to $300) are marked size 40 (meaning an American 9 or 9-1/2). If combat boots aren’t your thing, there are Chelsea boots, other ankle boots, high-heeled boots, wedge ankle boots—you get the picture.
Hair Pins, Safety Pins and . . . Nail Clippers
UPDATE: This box of . . . um . . . stuff sold for $960, including auction house premium.
I think this “curated” box of hair pins, safety pins and nail clippers has to be my favorite item (lot #2182). Ooh, I thought I saw some rubber bands in there too, but I think maybe they’re just long bobby pins. (Estimate $200 to $300)
