Let’s throw it back for a sec: remember when running paid ads meant picking your audience from a menu? You’d toggle a few interests, plug in an age range, maybe add a zip code or two and boom! Targeted ad.

But if you’ve tried that lately and watched your results tank… you’re not imagining things.

In 2025, platforms like Meta and TikTok have changed the game. Thanks to Apple’s iOS privacy updates and the rise of AI-powered campaigns, advertisers no longer get access to the same detailed audience data. So the platforms are doing the targeting for us now. And the tool they’re using to do it?

Your creative.

Here’s a simple explanation:
Instead of you telling the platform who your audience is, the platform looks at your content to figure that out on its own.

The ad algorithm reads your copy, watches your video, listens to the voiceover, and analyzes how people interact with it. Who watches it all the way through? Who clicks? Who converts? From there, it starts showing your ad to more people like them.

In other words:

✨ Your content is your targeting. ✨

Which means the more clearly your content speaks to a specific person or feeling, the better it performs. Generic ads = generic results.

Here’s what we recommend for small-but-mighty marketing teams:

Before you write a single line of copy or press record, ask:

  • What do our customers want to feel?

  • What’s going on in their life right now?

  • What would make them stop scrolling and think, “This is for me”?

Focus your creative around those answers. You're not just selling a product. You're selling a feeling.

You don’t need 10 new videos a month. You need a few strong videos with multiple versions:

  • Try 3 different hooks or openers

  • Test 2 different voiceovers

  • Make a 6-second version and a 30-second version

  • Add captions or text overlays to one version, leave them off the other

This lets you see what actually lands and gives the platform room to optimize.

Don't just stare at click-through rates. Ask:

  • What message pulled people in?

  • Which version got watched the longest?

  • Are we speaking clearly enough to the people we want to reach?

Refine and repeat weekly. Test. Learn. Tweak.

You don’t need a 30-page media brief or a hyper-targeted audience list anymore.
You need content that makes people feel something.

At my company &Scene, we help marketing teams do exactly that, building high-performing Reels and TikToks with creative strategy baked in. We think like media buyers, but write like brand storytellers. And every ad we make is designed to test, learn, and perform.

👉 Curious what that looks like for your brand? Book a call with us. Let’s build content that finds your people and actually converts.
