Today’s episode is about public television, classic literature, and an extremely charismatic Jack Russell Terrier. Yes, we are talking about the iconic mid-90’s program Wishbone!

There’s a new documentary out about the show -- it’s called What’s the Story, Wishbone?, and I got to talk to two of the documentary’s producers, who also worked on the original show: Betty Buckley, who also produced Wishbone, and Larry Brantley, who played the voice of Wishbone himself.

What struck me about the documentary was the fact that while this show wasn’t easy to make, the cast and crew approached it joyfully. Very few people who worked on the show had much experience at all, but in a way, that was the magic -- because no one knew how things were “supposed” to be made, they were able to make something the likes of which had never existed before.

And of course, a book-loving dog in pantaloons is always a delight.

  1. I’ll be a panelist for the delightful quiz show Pop Quiz Hot Shot at Lincoln Lodge here in Chicago on Sunday, August 2! Get tickets here.

  2. There are still tickets for the event I’m moderating with theeeeee Emily St. John Mandel on Sept. 26 at Thalia Hall!
