We were in France last week to move my youngest into an apartment for her semester abroad and I had the opportunity to experience the first few days of Paris Deco Off for the first time. I was pleasantly surprised to find Paris had returned to the city that I have always loved, after my last visit in 2022 which was a little disappointing, it was bustling with people even in the cold and rain of January. This was my first winter visit to the city and although it is not my favorite time of year anywhere it was a really great visit without the crowds you find in the warmer months, also if you want to experience some of the holiday lights they were still up and draping along the streets in a lot of the neighborhoods, so so pretty! The light was magical and soft in the evening and we spent the entire trip visiting smaller museums, drinking hot chocolate, eating in cafes, shopping and walking everywhere. We had hoped to visit the southern beaches of France, but found that a lot of the resorts are closed for the off season, which left us extra time to explore around Paris, it was the perfect combination of relaxing and sightseeing to help us recover from the busyness of the holidays.
We visited the Musée de l'Orangerie for the first time and I completely fell in love with the space and exhibit. Monet is an all time favorite and I loved seeing these pieces. We had visited the Musée d'Orsay the day before and just did an add on to our ticket (just 6 euros) so we could visit any time during our stay. I had a loose list of sites to see and we missed a few so those will be at the top of the list next time, I will include a list with links at the bottom of this post if you are looking for a little inspiration and plan to share a little more detail in separate posts on some of our stops.
We popped over to La Tour Eiffel for a bit on our first day. It was freezing but it always has the best views so we always try to go up if we have time.
The newly reopened Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris was beautiful and free to go inside, they still are working on the exterior back portion so the garden was not open while we were there, it’s still gorgeous and worthwhile.
We stayed at Hotel Therese, which is very close to the Palais Royal so we passed through there on our way to the Marais several times, it’s always such a great photo spot even in the winter, all that symmetry and the unobscured views of the architectural details make it one of my favorites. In the spring and summer it is full of flowers and the best shade trees.
