“The well of Providence is deep. It’s the buckets we bring that are small.”

- Mary Webb

It’s 4 AM, and here I am again—staring into the darkness, feeling the weight of my own history, the sharp edges of every bad choice, the memories that ache like old bruises. It’s always 4 AM when they come back, these memories, the ones you keep buried in daylight. They slip through the cracks when everything else is still, bringing a harsh kind of honesty that only the night knows how to deliver.

They say the well of Providence is deep, that there’s something infinite to draw from if you’ve got the right bucket. But what about the times I showed up with cracked, leaky buckets, barely able to hold anything life threw at me? I wonder how many chances slipped through, how many lessons I’ve missed by showing up too small, too scared, too broken to take what life was handing me.

I think about the things I’ve carried. Childhood trauma, for one—a shadow that followed me for years. Wounds that felt like a prison I’d never break free from. It made me feel small. That was the real weight of it: the way it kept me seeing myself as something less, something stained. But now, in this stillness, I see it was teaching me strength, resilience I didn’t know I had. It was a teacher, that pain, as brutal as it was honest. It carved me out, made room for something else. It taught me that the past can’t own me unless I let it. And maybe, just maybe, it’s time to put down what I don’t need and make space for what I do.

So here I am, staring down the lessons of my life, wondering if maybe I can bring a bigger bucket next time. And if you’re awake at this hour, wrestling your own shadows, maybe these five lessons will mean something to you, too.

1. Own Where You Are, Mess and All

Stop running from your life. Stand there and own it, the mess, the mistakes, the scars. You don’t need to pretend it’s pretty; you just need to face it. Every last painful piece of it is yours, and until you accept that, you’re dragging a ball and chain that’ll keep you small. Own your story, no matter how jagged, no matter how raw.

2. The Well Runs Deep; You Can Always Go Back

Life doesn’t close its doors. That well of chance and change and second tries—it doesn’t dry up. No matter how many times you’ve shown up empty-handed, there’s something left if you’re willing to go back. Don’t let fear of the past keep you from what’s out there. The world has more to give if you’ll reach for it.

3. Bring a Bucket Big Enough to Hold It All

Quit thinking small. Quit telling yourself you’re only worth scraps. Show up to life with a heart wide enough to hold what you want. Start thinking like you deserve more. Those cracks you carry don’t have to define you; they’re just part of the container. If you’re going to keep going back to the well, you might as well bring something big enough to hold all that life can give.

4. Give Yourself Grace, Even for the Dark Parts

There are things we’d all rather not face, choices we’d take back if we could. But here’s the thing—you’re still here, learning, trying. Let that mean something. Give yourself a break. Life isn’t about perfection; it’s about surviving the mess, about seeing beauty even in the broken parts. Don’t let shame weigh you down. Give yourself the grace you’d give a child and move forward.

5. Fight Like Hell for What Matters

When morning comes, don’t just crawl out of bed and limp through the day. Get up and fight for what’s left, for the dreams you buried, for the person you’re still becoming. Fight for it all. You can’t change what’s behind you, but you sure as hell can fight for what’s in front of you. Don’t let the past steal any more from you. Show up, push forward, and take what’s yours.

So here’s the truth: it’s 4 AM, and the past is a dark thing, a heavy thing. But dawn is coming. And when it does, don’t let it find you cowering. Stand up. Fight. Bring a bigger bucket. Life’s got more to give—if you’re ready to take it.
