Sadler's Open House: A New Online Class: Traditions Of Virtue Ethics

Earlier today, I held this online Open House session to discuss the upcoming online class I will be teaching here using Substack as a main platform for it. It’s called Ancient Virtue Ethics: Three Main Traditions, and will run for about 18 weeks, starting this month and running until December. I also answered some questions posted in the chat by some of the people attending the Open House.

Each week for paying subscribers, I’ll be either hosting an online session (most likely using Zoom), which will be recorded, or posting a prerecorded video focused on topics in virtue ethics. I’ll also be posting summaries, discussion and writing prompts, and other resources useful for students. A portion of these will also be made available to free subscribers as well.

There is a schedule for the class readings, which I ran through in its entirety during the Open House, and which you can also find here. I’ll produce a page with curated links to the texts we’ll be studying together in this class. For this particular class, we are going to focus on three important traditions of virtue ethics in ancient times: Platonism, Aristotelianism, and Stoicism, reading representative texts and thinkers.

As I mentioned during the session, as an answer to one question, all that it takes to enroll in the class is a desire to participate and a paid subscription. I’m hoping that the sessions, videos, resources, and posts will promote discussion, conversation, and reflection as a key part of the learning. Perhaps some students might even use the writing prompts as spurs for posts in their own Substacks.
