It's the damn GMR August AotM

Yo Peeps!

So in the ongoing world of Tom’s spanky-new Substack thing, we have arrived at our first Album of the Month.

For curious minds, AotM equals Album of the Month and of course GMR equals Green Monkey Records. You already know what July is. So where did I get AotM? I got it from Julian Cope’s (The Tear Drop Explodes) Head Heritage site. https://www.headheritage.co.uk/ when I first started up Green Monkey Records “Mach 2” way back when (2009).

I was looking for something to put on our then spanky-new GMR web page on the months I didn’t have a new release, which was basically at least every other month, sometimes every three months (yes, I know I’ve used spanky-new twice). On Julian’s site, when he didn’t have a new Julian Cope release, he would do an AotM. It would be something that he thought was cool, Blue Oyster Cult or Scott Walker or whatever the heck else he thought he should put up and write some shit about. He made some really great comps that were his assembled invention alone. Something to keep people looking at the site when he didn’t have a new album. I said to Howie, “Let’s just rip off this concept” though of course we fully credited him at all times. If you go look at the AotM archive on GreenMonkeyRecords.com/AotM-2 and go back in Professor Peabody’s Wayback Machine, you can see exactly what I’m talking about. Green Monkey releases, with other cool Northwest stuff on the months in between. If you start out in September 2009 and read your way through, you’ll have a pretty good idea what we were up to through October 2022 (Olympia: A True Story is the last AotM). Plus there’s a whole archive of Tom’s Rant there too, my basic quick notes about what was happening that day. Same era stuff so music historians, here you go.

Nowadays we got so many fucking releases that we never put up AotMs anymore. We just put up a new Green Monkey release every month and sometimes more, like this month there’s four of em. Sweet Jesus!

Across 35thtrace their origins back to the fall of 2014, when would-be singer/songwriter Mimi Katz and future drummer Lincoln Ross met in kindergarten. Seven years later, in middle school, they teamed up with bassist Logan Stallard and lead guitarist Dylan Welch to complete the lineup. The band name comes from the busy avenue they cross to get to the Pink House, where they rehearse. All four members attend West Seattle High School.
