Your Patterns Are Not Accidental

At some point, most people notice it.

The details change — the name, the face, the particular way the thing falls apart. But the underlying shape of it is one you’ve seen before. The dynamic that starts electric and ends exhausting. The person who is intensely present and then suddenly, bafflingly, not. The slow realization that you’ve been here before, in a relationship that felt entirely new, with someone you’d never met.

The question that follows — why does this keep happening to me? — sounds like a question about luck. Like you’ve been standing in the wrong spots, drawing bad cards, somehow magnetizing a certain kind of person through no fault or pattern of your own.

It isn’t about luck.

Your patterns aren’t accidents. They are a nervous system doing precisely what it learned to do — seeking out the relational landscape that it was trained to recognize as connection. Not the landscape that’s good for you, necessarily. The landscape that’s familiar. And familiar, when it comes to love, can feel an awful lot like meant to be.

Here is the mechanism, without the jargon: early in life, you developed a template for what closeness looks like. What it feels like when someone is present. How you know you’re loved. What the texture of safety is, or what passes for it. That template was built from what you had, not from what was ideal. And from that point forward, your nervous system has been comparing every potential partner against it.

When someone matches the template, something in you lights up. Recognition. Resonance. That sense that this person just gets you, or that something clicked. When they don’t match, the feeling is more neutral, sometimes even flat — the perfectly nice person who leaves you wondering why you don’t feel anything.

What you’ve been calling chemistry is sometimes just that: recognition. The nervous system finding something familiar and calling it home.

The problem, of course, is that home wasn’t always safe. Some of us learned what connection felt like from people who were inconsistent, or distant, or only available under certain conditions. We learned to associate love with a particular kind of longing, or anxiety, or the specific relief of someone coming back after they’ve pulled away. That relief — the return after the withdrawal — can feel more like love than steadiness ever does. Because steadiness was never in the template.

Sit with that for a moment. Think about the last time you felt real pull toward someone. Now ask: what exactly did that pull feel like in your body? Was it warmth and ease, or was it something more like activation? The particular aliveness of uncertainty? If it’s the latter, that’s worth knowing about yourself. Not as a judgment, but as information.

Recognizing your patterns isn’t the same as being trapped by them. It’s the opposite. A pattern that operates outside your awareness runs the show — it selects for you, responds for you, keeps choosing the same situation while your conscious mind wonders why. A pattern you can see has lost that power. You can still feel the pull and notice what it is. You can still feel the flat neutrality and wonder whether it’s disinterest or just the unfamiliar sensation of safety.

The question changes from “why does this keep happening to me?” to “what in me recognizes this person?” That shift, from passive to curious, from happening-to to noticing, is where the real work begins. Not a fixing project, not a therapeutic excavation of everything that ever went wrong. Just an honest inquiry. What does my nervous system call home, and is that a place I want to keep returning to?

You don’t have to dismantle the template to start working with it. You just have to be able to see it clearly enough that it isn’t the only thing doing the choosing.
