The first week of school always feels a little chaotic. Sitting down with my kids before school starts to work through this planner, sets us all up for success. Having my kids name the food they want that first week helps in so many ways. It sets them up with a plan for what to pack in their lunchbox and it gives me ideas for food preparation that they actually want. They have a voice, I get a grocery list, and we all go into the school year with a plan.

Back to school season can feel like one long to-do list. But don’t forget that what kids remember most is the time spent together. These six traditions have become some of my family’s favorites. They are simple little ways to slow down and celebrate a new beginning.

When I was a working mom, my husband was the one who handled the morning school drop-offs. Every single day, as the kids climbed out of the car, he’d smile and say the same three things:

Have fun.

Be kind.

Learn a lot.

These cutie little scalloped skirts are perfect for your teen/tween daughters, but let’s not kid ourselves, they are cute for YOU too! These are cute, comfortable, functional(they have pockets), but the scallop takes it up a notch from just a regular tennis skirt. And, the current sale price can’t be beat!

One of the most common questions we ask our kids after school is also one of the easiest for them to answer with a one-word response: “How was school?” “Fine.”

Instead, try asking a question that gives them something specific to think about. You might get a much more meaningful conversation and learn things you never would have heard otherwise.

  • What made you laugh today?

  • Who did you sit by at lunch?

  • What was the hardest part of your day?

  • What are you looking forward to tomorrow?

  • If you could redo one part of your day, what would it be?

  • Was anyone kind to you today?

  • How did you help someone or how were you kind today?

Don’t underestimate the power of asking these questions while your driving, making dinner, walking the dog, or getting ready for bed. Sometimes kids open up most when you’re doing something alongside them rather than sitting across from them asking for an update.
