Randolph Mantooth of 'Emergency!' Dies at 80

Randolph Mantooth, a handsome Universal contract player who became a major TV star on Emergency!, died Thursday in hospice care. He was 80.

Mantooth, who’d suffered from cancer since 2015, had been noticeably gaunt in his most recent social media appearances. He’d been a popular draw at autograph shows and on Cameo.

Born September 19, 1945, in Sacramento, he was discovered while acting in a play.

He debuted on TV in 1970 and worked steadily in the medium, guesting on everything from The Bold Ones: The Senator (1970) to Adam-12 (1971-1972) ahead of being cast as Gage on Emergency! in 1972.

The show, about paramedics, was launched at a time when the concept of pre-hospital emergency care was so new that Mantooth did not even know what a paramedic was. Incredible as it seems today, the TV show popularized the idea so much so that about half the U.S. had proximity to such services by the time it ended in 1979.

Emergency! was such a hit it spawned a Saturday-morning cartoon, with Mantooth and his co-star Kevin Tighe voicing their popular characters.

Mantooth also found himself appearing in teenybopper magazines as he hit age 30.

Along with his work on that show, Mantooth was a soap regular, including hundreds of episodes of Loving (1987-1995) and The City (1995-1997).

He made dozens of TV guest appearances, including on The Love Boat (1979), Battlestar Galactica (1979), Charlie’s Angels (1980), Fantasy Island (1981), Dallas (1984), Murder, She Wrote (1985), ER (2000) and Sons of Anarchy (2011), before retiring in 2013.

Mantooth became an effective spokesman for emergency-services professionals, and always expressed his admiration for them and his appreciation for how their real-life careers enhanced his acting career.

He is survived by his second wife, Kristen, and by both a brother and a sister.⚡️
